Impact of Global Warming on Marine Ecosystems

Global warming has a significant impact on marine ecosystems, causing various changes that can affect marine life and the balance of the ecosystem as a whole. One of the main impacts of global warming is increasing sea water temperatures. Higher temperatures speed up the coral bleaching process, a phenomenon that occurs when corals lose their symbiotic algae. This process not only threatens the survival of corals, but also the various species that depend on coral reefs for shelter and nutrition. In addition, global warming causes increased levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, most of which is absorbed by the oceans. This CO2 absorption causes a decrease in seawater pH, a condition known as ocean acidification. This acidification has serious implications for marine creatures, especially organisms that have shells, such as mollusks and coral reefs. A decrease in pH inhibits their ability to build and maintain shell structures, thereby disrupting the food chain in marine ecosystems. Reduced oxygen in seawater, due to global warming, adds challenges to marine life. Areas of low oxygen, known as “dead zones,” are expanding due to factors such as temperature changes and pollution. The presence of “dead zones” can kill organisms that cannot survive in those conditions, resulting in a reduction in biodiversity and ecosystem productivity. Finally, global warming is increasing pressure on marine resources. Human activities such as overfishing, pollution, and habitat conquest exacerbate the impacts of climate change. Without appropriate action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and preserve marine ecosystems, the consequences of global warming could become increasingly severe. The impact of global warming on marine ecosystems clearly threatens the health of the oceans and the welfare of the living creatures that depend on them. Therefore, there is a need for support for conservation and sustainable management initiatives to protect marine ecosystems from the increasing effects of global warming.
